Worst idea by Ford, except for maybe the Pinto. |

Is that a Studebaker in the background (on the left, silver/black colored)? |

It is indeed. A 1956 (moulding in the luggage lid, no tailfins), and since it's got a B-pillar it is a Flight Hawk (L6) or Power Hawk (V8). |

At one time the Edsel used in this movie was owned by me. The guy who bought it from me rented it to the production company. When I bought it in the seventies for $100 it was was in really rough shape. I had the engine rebuilt and the seats reupholstered. The roof was originally light blue like most of the body. When I had it repainted I thought it would look better with a dark blue roof to match the side scallops. We drove it for every day transportation and put about 20,000 miles on the odometer. It had a custom plate that read "APHLOP". It was fun to own and drive and drew a lot of attention. Anyone interested in more stories about this car? |

Hey Carlarm, do you know where this car is today? |

"THIS is THE EDSEL". Can you imagine any major car company putting on an hour long prime time network special for a new car? |

A '58 Edsel sedan is my dream car. Yeah it's ugly and was one of the biggest marketing flops in history, but I like oddball underdog stuff. It's a very quirky and distinctive car. Plus, being able to open the trunk using the ignition likely hadn't been done before. "More new ideas! More yooouuuuuu ideas!" It's an automotive flop turned quirky collectable. Funny story, I actually posted this picture to a historic photos forum after finding it on another website and captioning it as a happy couple celebrating their new car while having zero clue it was a screenshot from a movie. The forum members were good sports about it, even pointing out the anachronistic radio tower in the background. |
