I've never seen a UK plate that was 2 rows of letters high. How common are such plates? |

Quite common for cars with square or narrower plate housings. Most obvious source is anything Italian 60s to 80s (Fiat, Alfa, Lancia and so on) plus of course lots of 60s VWs. Some Japanese as this but usually only when plate housed in a bumper cut-out as here, and similarly for some US imports. Also lots of 60s Jags (Mk2, S-Type, 420, MkX, 420G) and respective Daimlers. Also used a lot for trucks. |
