In some instruction manuals back then it was recommended, not to mount fog- or flashlights on top of the bumper in front of the grille, because then the cooler didn't get enough fresh air and the engine can be overheated.

The elipsoidal dip lights were 'bright revolution', nicely cheating with optic rules (among other things, because magnifying glass effect).
