This Ford Fairlane 500 was used in 6 Hawaii Five-O episodes in 1968. There is a really good shot of the Fairlane at the beginning of the episode entitled "Deathwatch" which aired December 25,1968. The other episodes that it appeared in were: Tiger by the Tail; 24 Karat Kill; No Blue Skies; Up Tight; and By the Numbers. It was used as the prosecutors car in the opening scenes of Deathwatch.

The car still exists and we have owned "Danno" (our nickname for the car) since 1993. The Ford Motor Company furnished 6 vehicles per year for 12 years to CBS for use in the production of Hawaii Five-O. This car was never sold to the public, as it was ordered by Ford Corporate as an Introductory Show Unit. According to Ford records, the above pictured Fairlane is the only one of its configuration and color shipped to Hawaii. All of the Fords shipped to the show were shipped to Honolulu Auto Center, 711 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu HI 96813. Mr. Bernard Oseransky, the Assistant to the Production Manager, picked up the Fords from the dealership for the show. Mr. Oseransky was later promoted to the position of Vice President for CBS Studio Center.

I was told that this car was scheduled to be destroyed after it was used on Hawaii Five-O. Somehow, it slipped through the cracks and wasn't demolished but apparently sold by the production company. Title is clear. The VIN production number is less than 14.

The car was loaded for its time. It came with a factory S-Code 390GT, 325HP V-8 engine, coupled to a heavy duty C-6 Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic transmission with a console mounted shifter between two bucket seats. It came with factory power disc front brakes with drum brakes on the rear axle. Power windows, power steering and of course, a power operated convertible top and an AM radio. The tires were WSW 7.75 X 14-4 Ply rated tires. It came with a 9", 2.75 standard axle ratio. The data plate shows a production date of 04G, which in Ford speak is July 4, 1967. The July 4, date was used by Ford to keep track of its cars along with the DSO Code (District Sales Office) in this case the DSO is 89, which means, Ford Transportation Services Ordering District. This 1968 Fairlane was actually built on August 21, 1967 for Ford Motor Company, Room 192 FDGO 17101 Rotunda DR, Dearborn, Michigan, 48121. The car was built at the Lorain, Ohio plant to fill the order placed by the Ford Motor Company.

The car was originally painted a very light pale blue (Ford Diamond Blue Paint), with two tone blue bucket seat interior. If you look at the pictures posted above, one can see that the production company was pretty rough with the car. Dents, dings, body trim coming off and eventually half off on the right side of the car. The car was refurbished prior to 1993 and is now Ford Wimbledon White with a black vinyl and grey cloth fabric interior. We like the color combination better than the pale blue.

I have contacted the new CBS Hawaii Five O production company many times asking if they would be interested in connecting the new show with the older show through the use of our Fairlane 500. So far, not even the courtesy of a reply. However, the local CBS affiliate did a news story about the history of our Fairlane and CBS aired the story in Phoenix, right after the introduction of the new Hawaii Five-O show, in September of 2010.

Regards,
H5O

Thank you very much. It took 10 years of old school research and a lot of very helpful Ford fans who had Ford Motor Company connections to put it all together. A Torino collector put me in touch with Marti Auto Works in El Mirage, Arizona. MAW is licensed by Ford to go through their car data base for various decades of production. We found fantastic information from official Ford Motor Company records. I hope that you enjoy the report and the pictures. Thanks for a great site.

Our 1968 Ford Fairlane is one of the first 50 preproduction vehicles made in 1967 by Ford for the coming 1968 year. It's one of the first 50 preproduction 1968 models built to work out the bugs in the assembly line for the new 1968 Ford cars and for promotional use and testing, prior to dealers ordering the new 1968 Ford vehicles. Our 1968 Fairlane 500 was ordered by Ford for Ford as an "Introductory Show Unit." But yes, the previous 1967 Fairlane models had stacked headlights.

That is interesting. Now I understand why they were ordered to be destroyed after filming. Ford didn't want the liability for any issues that might come up. Thanks for sharing.

The fact that the car still exists is amazing. I'm told the first 50 preproduction models that Ford built were basically hand built. They were used for testing, perfecting the assembly line for the dealers, and for promoting the Ford product on television shows. The car was never sold to the public, which is consistent with the car being given away to CBS in Hawaii. Also, the warranty for this car went into effect on the day that it was built. Normally the warranty would become active on the day the vehicle was sold to a consumer. Ford has no record of any warranty claims ever made on this Fairlane, again indicating the car was never sold to a retail consumer. Ford Motor Company knows that the car still exists, as indicated by their correspondence to me about the car.

Many years ago, I spoke with Jack Lord's private secretary, Margaret Doversola. She said that Jack Lord was selling just about anything he could to continue to produce Hawaii Five-O as it was very expensive to do the series. She speculated that the Fairlane 500 was sold to help raise additional funds for the show. She told me that Jack Lord had sold his RV which served as his dressing room when on location. He did what was necessary to keep the show on for 12 years.

Thanks for posting the pictures.
