That's a door guard for protecting against parking lot dings. I'd guess it was probably optional on all models, maybe as a dealer-installed accessory. |

Interesting for us in UK as only fitted to US (+CDN?) cars - never seen on home turf. |

Probably more useful in the land of roadyachts with doors that opened into the next county. My Cougar has similar guards; they're dented all to hell, but the doors are straight and smooth. |
