1947+ Mk.IV Convertible?

Convertibles (Drop Head Coupe) were 3 1/2 litre normally. So that, 1947 Jaguar 3 1/2 litre.

Slightly surprised that this is our only 3½ Litre convertible - have we got any more under different names because it's difficult to write "3½"? Are they hiding as Mk4 and do we need some renaming??

Some renaming would be a good idea, I looked into it slightly some time ago when searching info about US-market Mark 2´s since they never carried that designation. I then found that these Mk.IV´s never were marketed this way either, only by enginesize. The Mk.IV designation was made up some 15 years after the cars were produced, probably by enthusiasts. In the same way the 2.4 Litre and 3.4 Litre Saloons, of the late fifties, have been labeled Mark 1 in retrospect, there never was such a thing when they were new.

From what I found Jaguar spelled out Mark in full and used roman numerals from V to X on the large cars. On the 1960+ 2.4 Litre to 3.8 Litre Saloons they used Mark 2 with a normal number. So it differs from how we´ve entered them here. The homemade Mark I and IV designations could be put in the chassisfield instead, they still serve a purpose even if they are unofficial.

So if we decide to get rid of Mk.IV as a name and replace by 2½ Litre and 3½ Litre, will we be able to split all our Mk.IVs accurately, or will there be some which remain uncertain? I'm definitely not an early Jag expert, so this is a :hello: to those who would know. Is it worth doing/attempting? Or should we reverse the telescope and make everything Mk.IV with 2½ Litre and 3½ Litre in additional info when we can separate them (eg ^^^ all convertibles were 3½ Litre)?

For the Mk1, the same problem applies - 2.4 and 3.4 will rarely be precisely separable, so Mk1 seems - to me - our best tactic.

There will always be some that we can´t be certain if they´re 2½ Litre or 3½ Litre, or even 1½ Litre depending if we can see the size of headlights. So for practical reasons it might seem easier leaving it unattended, but I meant to move this information to the chassisfield instead, it will still be there to group them together. It will also still be visible on the page, but within brackets instead.

This way we can keep the namefield clear from homemade designations, and still use them. The brackets will signal that it´s not a part of the modelname. We already use chassisfield for for grouping purposes, both with correct codes from manufacturers or a variety of other designations made up by others. On Jaguar XJ6 we put Series I - III in chassisfield for that reason. Series I is made up in retrospect just like Mark 1 is , so making a change would only make the site more consistent I think.

So Mk.IV in chassis field seems sensible. And we can live with several entries simply being 1948 Jaguar [Mk.IV] where we can not guess engine size?? If so:
1] /vehicles.php?make=Jaguar&model=1%BD+Litre&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on needs Mk.IV in chassis field
2] /vehicles.php?make=Jaguar&model=2%BD+Litre&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on needs Mk.IV in chassis field
3] /vehicles.php?make=Jaguar&model=3%BD+Litre&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on needs Mk.IV in chassis field
4] /vehicles.php?make=Jaguar&model=Mk.IV&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on needs Mk.IV in chassis field and Mk.IV removed from model field; some are convertibles so can be renamed 3½ Litre.
None of these are particularly big groups, so it is not a major exercise. Does everyone agree before these are changed??

We have several 2½ Litre dhc and it seems these had narrower radiators than 3½ Litre, so relabelling this as 2½ Litre unless anyone knows better. And this may be the same Italian-owned rent-a-film-car as in several other films.

All done. From comments in various entries, the convertibles can be 2½ or 3½ Litre so this is not a separating measure, although it seems 3½ Litre had wider grille than 2½ Litre. This has been used to identify them all so that there are none identified just as "Jaguar [Mk.IV]". With a better of luck it may all be accurate, but comments welcome. /vehicle_271392-Jaguar-21-2-Litre-MkIV-1948.html is recorded by DVLA as 2½ Litre but seems wide grille, maybe also /vehicle_186700-Jaguar-21-2-Litre-MkIV-1948.html - so there may still be some inconsistencies.
