So stolen or smuggled. Maybe both. |

It was said that only high ranking officials are allowed to own a car in North Korea, this car was theirs. |

@kegare: there is no legal possibility to export cars and other stuff from Japan to the DPRK (as my friend Hiroshi has told it to me /movie.php?id=267419 ) - although a plenty of things were transported this way daily... |

Japan only banned trade with North Korea in 2002 (IIRC). Up until then, North Korea bought a large amount of Japanese goods, often via companies owned by ethnic Koreans in Japan. Lots of secondhand vehicles were shipped to North Korea, completely legally. Also, Japanese Koreans with relatives who had "returned" to the North sent cars as presents. Here's a photo of a Pyongyang street showing four cars, only one of which is not a used import from Japan. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fljckr/2604170573/in/pool-871248@N21/ -- Last edit: 2011-11-07 01:42:24 |

Japan prohibits the export of cars to North Korea from 2007. (United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718) |

But the smuggling continues, as my friend has told me. |
