The bus in question is a 1954 BMMO D7 with Metro Cammell bodywork.

It is either BMMO fleet number 4111 registered THA 111, sold to Universal studios in April 1964, or fleet number 4110, registered THA 110, sold to Universal in March 1965. The Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. was the largest English bus fleet owner outside London, and used, as well as its own designs, vehicles from Tilling Stevens, Leyland, Guy, AEC and Daimler. It never owned a Routemaster.

It is only the second BMMO vehicle in the entire database, and the first BMMO double decker.

BMMO built its own vehicles from 1923 to 1969, using its own designs and even built its own engines and gearboxes. Its works was in Carlyle Road Edgbaston Birmingham and the headquarters was in Smethwick, Staffordshire. I used to ride home from school on a D7 so I'm speaking from experience.

The D7 was introduced into traffic in August 1953 and a total of 350 were built all with bodywork by Metro Cammell.

My money's on THA110, but I've no proof. The other screencap from 'Buses on Screen' is from a Columbo episode 'Dagger of the Mind', and I'm told there's a BMMO D7 in a 'McCloud' episode as well.

The other bus seen here is probably a Leyland Titan PD1, id unknown.

A D7 is also glimpsed in 'At Bertram's Hotel' from the Miss Marple dramas starring Joan Hickson.

Incidentally THA111 was photographed with the Who as their 'Magic Bus, with route number X69 on the destination indicator. It may be coincidence, but the D7 in 'Columbo' also has X69 on the front: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Who_bus.jpg

X 69 is the Midland Red route number for the Coventry to Leicester express service, and if the buses were sold out of service from Leicester garage it is possible that the blinds were left in that contained this route.

stevea, it's interesting you should mention "Columbo" and "McCloud." I recall both of those being shot on the Universal lot, as this movie was, so these could all be the same bus.
