Very interesting. It is our first French tank from the WW2 periode. And it has a story to tell.

This 'char léger modéle 1935-R' is better known as Renault R-35, a light tank introduced, as the name already suggests, in 1935. It was a good tank design and over 1600 had been built by 1940. After the German invasion some 840 were still in useable condition and most were used in the Wehrmacht (German Army) with some being given to the Italian (109) and Bulgarian (40) armies. The German name was 'Panzerkampfwagen 35R 731(f)'. Quite a lot were converted for all sorts of duties from howitzers to airfield snow-plows, but about 100 stayed more or less original. This is one of the fairly original tanks. It is known that 8 were still in erman use by 1945. So this might be one of them. The gun is not original, presumably a mock-up. The cupola is missing, a sign that it had been exchanged for a hatch with a flat two-part lid, a typical German conversion to give the commander better visibility. Also the exhaust muffler is missing -- should be visible on the left-hand side. Must have been a nice sound, if the engine was actually running ... a 5.8 litre which burned 2 litres of petrol for one kilometre!
