"Subsidy" vehicles actually date from 1912 when the British government paid a subsidy to owners of vehicles that qualified. They would receive £50 on purchasing a vehicle and an annual subsidy for three years of £20. The vehicle was expected to be maintained in good order and would be available for purchase at 72 hours notice, in the event of war, at current market value plus 25%. Vehicles were arranged in two classes, 30cwt and 3 tons, and Leyland vehicles were the only ones which qualified in both classes, |
