 Unless this is the same car as in DynaMikes link (which I'm not entirely convinced it is (bumper, tyres)) I can't for sure see how this is a BMW 321.

I think this is either a July 1937 - January 1939 BMW 320 or a slightly later BMW 321. The difference between those is that the 320 had the front axle from the 319 while the 321 had the front axle from the 326 with slightly wider track and wider tyres, although I can't see the difference. Both had the same straight six cylinder, 1971 cc 45 Hp DIN engine, and a top speed of 110 km/h. 4.185 made of the 320, 3.696 of the 321 according to my book (Rosellen; Das weiss-blaue Wunder, Prisma, 1987). Cabriolet versions built by Baur, Stuttgart.

 I thought it looked similar to a 321, so I googled BMW 321 Cabriolet (images) and found this link. Since most other images show 4-light convertibles and this was also in this strange hard red colour I just thought it would be the same car. Indeed, bumper and tyres are different, but still I think this must be the very same vehicle (now better restored), but you are right that the date 1938 and the model 321 don't match... So I guess they made a mistake and it has to be either a 1938 320 or a 1939 321... Thanks for being precise in this, Zodiac :)

 Not a BMW 320, it's 321, front bumper is not genuine.
