Is PB more like a chassis code? There's a picture of a manual, which calls it 1500/2500 range. http://www.instruction-manuals.co.uk/category/cars/IMcars/commer.gif |

I guess I agree with BeanBandit's comments about the chassis codes, [PA] 1960 - 1966 and [PB] 1967 - 1983. This one dates from September 1965 onwards with the mesh lozenge shaped grill. So Commer 1500 [PB] for this picture as the quantity produced would be greater for the PB. Other listings for this type of vehicle are not consistant, 1500/2500/PB are all used. -- Last edit: 2006-09-05 12:24:55 |

PA and PB were model codes to differentiate updated model in August 67. Only difference initially between earlier PA and later PB was handbrake was shifted from rear brake operation to front brakes (less efective but maybe saved money?) and use of alternator instead of gen. Engines/box replicated current Minx models - 1959 - '62 = 1500cc, 1963/64 = 1600, and 1965 onward = 1725cc with all syncho box. PA van was also first British van to offer diesel option in 1963 - Perkins 4/99 1500 and 2500 were optional weight ratings - 15cwt / 25 cwt. 2500 had heavier springs and 670 x 15 commercial grade tyres to enable the heavier payload verses 640s on 1500 . Later on, there were also 2000 and 18 cwt versions. The 2500 had discreet 2500 badges at the leading edge of the door on both sides - as can be seen, this is a 2500. Impossible to tell visually whether this is a PA or PB as new grille appeared on 65 which was still a PA model, but if the van is new when film was made (1969), it would be reasonable to assume it is a PB. Hope this helps |
