Chevrolet did not use the 1500 designation until 1988. According to the show this truck was originally equipped with a diesel. FWIW NADA does list the Diesel option for the K10, which may or may not be accurate. -- Last edit: 2011-05-25 17:02:22 |

Has conventional "manual locking" front axle hubs. Factory stock rounded-line pickups and utilities can wade through 23 inches (584 mm) of water without intrusion. Maximum wading depth is about 29 inches (737 mm) without aftermarket modifications. -- Last edit: 2011-07-25 19:30:14 |

The pickup featured in episode 1.09 is a rounded-line 1983 Chevrolet K-10 Custom Deluxe Stepside. It is claimed as a 1983 model, which I suppose I can agree with, due to the front bumper. The pickup would have to have had the optional front appearance package and the headlamp valances would have been replaced as they are from the 1985-1987 model year group. The grille work is not factory, its aftermarket. The paint finish is also not factory, as the original colour was red. Certainly not a luxury or top-of-the-line model, as it’s equipped with the base, low level Custom Deluxe trim package, and lacks many optional features such as the Comfortilt steering wheel, power windows, power door locks and so on. It was also claimed as a diesel, and so being a 1983 model, the pickup would have had the 6.2 liter 379cid V-8 diesel mated to a standard 4-speed manual gearbox. The manual shifter in this pickup is replaced by an aftermarket style shifter. The 5.7 liter 350ci V-8 diesel was discontinued for 1982, replaced by the aforementioned 6.2 liter 379cid V-8 diesel. -- Last edit: 2011-08-08 06:15:21 |

Was that 5.7 the same one that caused all the trouble in Oldsmobiles and Caddys? IIRC it had deactivating cylinders that caused the problems or have I got this all muddled up? |

Yes that was the "bad" engine. The 5.7 liter 350ci V-8 diesel engine is related to the 5.7 liter 350ci V-8 gasoline engine. While the petrol/gasoline version of the 350ci V-8 was known for its bullet-proof reliability and power output, the diesel version suffered horribly. It was weak, and had lots of reliability issues, mainly due to poor design/component changes to allow the small block V-8 engine to run on diesel fuel. A dedicated replacement diesel engine was badly needed for GM’s pickups and utilities, which is where the all-new, advanced 6.2 liter 379ci V-8 diesel entered. It was far more reliable; more refined, and offered more power/torque. Water-in-fuel precaution systems and Ricardo Comet V pre-combustion chambers were among some of its new features. The 6.2 diesel was later certified for military applications. The only GM engine to have variable displacement (deactivating cylinders) in the '80s was Cadillac’s 368ci V-8-6-4 (L62) engine introduced in 1980. It mainly had reliability issues with the complicated electronic controls needed to switch the engine from V-8, to V-6, to V-4, and back again. The engine itself was said to reliable. -- Last edit: 2011-05-26 18:09:59 |

It didn't have a diesel. The fuel gauge said "Diesel Only", but when Tanner opened the hood, it was actually a carburated, two bolt main 350. It's likely someone replaced the gauge with one from a diesel. It was based on the Oldsmobile 350, though the heads are not compatible. Chevy, Buick and Pontiac also had a 350 (though Pontiac's was actually 355), which can cause confusion. All four engines are incompatible and share no parts in common. -- Last edit: 2013-07-30 09:00:18 |
