Wheels suggest V12 version, chrome side strip probably Daimler and even Van Den Plas trim as Double Six.

Why should this be Vanden Plas? Just seems like you're guessing a little bit.

Because it's a blooming thick side strip. But I did say probably.

Although on first glance this looks like one thick strip, maybe it's a chrome strip with a paint stripe underneath? But that could still mean Vanden Plas anyway.

I guess it's a single moulding with a paint-filled groove.

I think what it is is all Jaguar Series III bodies have this groove running along the side, and some of the Daimlers had a chrome strip running just above (or somewhat in it) and a thin paint stripe running just below it, extending further at each end than the chrome strip (I don't think the groove was filled with paint) Another example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/telkine/4236256113/in/photostream/

I think this can make it appear that the chrome is thicker, especially with non-HD, not close-up images like on this site. Also light can reflect off the groove part, like here http://www.flickr.com/photos/28291883@N03/3115784780/ (this doesn't seem to have a paint strip

As this picture shows, some of them had a chrome strip but no paint strip, although this one is labelled as a Sovereign, not a Double Six: http://www.flickr.com/photos/triggerscarstuff/4619267409/ Actually, here's a Double Six with chrome but no paint strip http://www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/5306517602/ but this is a late model one (J-reg = 1991/92) produced years after the XJ40 had replaced the Series III XJ6. So the design scheme could have changed by then.

According to this 1981 (1982 model year) brochure http://www.jag-lovers.org/brochures/82inpursuit.html (on page 8) Vanden Plas had a D badge behind the front wheel arch, but this detail could be hard to see on a lot of images on this site. Although the one on this page doesn't seem to have this.
