Didn't VAZ make the Zhiguli? |

Yes, but Shiguli was the first Lada named, up to the mid-70ies. Only in the USSR and a few COMECON-export countries, not in the West. |

The first Ladas imported into the UK (in about 1974, IIRC) were badged Жигули. I don't recall that it lasted long; Brits had problems with Cyrillic badging, although I seem to remember that Moskviches in the UK were badged in Cyrillic too. |

Were the RHD-Moskviches built in the USSR or in Belgium? |

My memory of UK Moskviches is that they were fully Russian - no suggestion of identity dilution as part-Belgian. |

Again IIRC, wasn't it the M-21 Volga that was assembled in Belgium - usually with Perkins and later Peugeot diesel engines, for use as taxis? |

In the 60s Sobimpex in Mortsel, near Antwerp, assembled the Volga M-21 with its original engine and with a diesel engine. First this diesel was a Perkins, then a Rover product. In the 70s also the M-24 was built here, again with the normal engine or with a diesl, first the Rover, then an Indénor machine. Sobimpex also built the Moskvitch 402/407/403 all with the possibility of a Perkins diesel version, and called Scaldia. And om 1968-1970 the new 408 was assembled in Vilvoorde, in the Belgian Renault factory (where before that date the Renault Rambler was built...). Still available with Perkins diesel These were called Scaldia 1400 (or Scaldia Diesel). But AFAIK all these were only for the Benelux (mainly Belgium). |

The other point I remember from UK road tests of Moskviches (408, 412) was the heavy criticism of the Russian-made tyres - I guess Belgian-built cars would have had European-sourced tyres (and been much better as a result). In theory at least, RHD Volga M21 saloon and M22 estate were available in UK May 63 - Feb 67 but only with 2498cc petrol; I'd guess Russian-made, but have no other info. I assume the motive for Belgian assembly was to avoid import duties within the Benelux agreements on internal trade; as UK was not part of European network in 1960s, Benelux-assembled cars had no advantage over Russian-made. But again, I don't know the detail and timing of these arrangements. |
