the correct name is 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire, if don't have the hood ornament is 1980 |

Not a Country Squire, no woodgrain sides. Just LTD Wagon. |

It's a 1979 model. Only year that the lower turn signal lenses were clear on these (not counting the 91's). |

This photo from a 1979 LTD brochure does not bear that out: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" Note amber lenses. Now note standard features list from the same brochure: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" You will see a hood ornament is listed as standard even on the lowest trim line. I maintain that the photo'ed car is a 1980 model. |

I'm not arguing the hood ornament issue as I can't see if there is one or not. And I still think it's very easy for those to fall off but that's beside the point. About the clear turn signals. I have only ever seen that on 1979 models. This I stand by 100%. However, I don't know if it was a full-year run or if the amber was added halfway through the '79 production run. It may even be possible that the clear turn signals only came on lower-trim models. But again, I've only ever seen 1979 models with this. |

I doubt the hood ornament would just "fall off" a 7-8 year old car which does not appear abused. Looks like we each have factors in our favor. We could list this either way. |

I meant fall off due to "outside influence," not simply on it's own |
◊ 2011-04-16 05:48 |
Well, I can only assume by "outside influence" you mean an accident. Such accident could also have just as easily damaged the parking lamp lenses possibly causing them to be replaced by clear ones. Normally, we don't assume the cars shown have been in accidents barring visual evidence of such. This car appears to be in excellent shape per the photo and we cannot just assume an accident knocked off the hood ornament. Since there isn't one and we know all 1979 models had them, we cannot conclude that this is a '79. -- Last edit: 2011-04-16 05:49:26 |

I was simply playing devil's advocate Commander. As a young scoundrel, I specifically remember breaking off the hood ornament of an LTD because it was so darn tempting and easy. I think that's why I say what I say so much :whiste: But I will still oppose because since only 1979 models had clear turn signal lenses, I can conclude that this is a 1979. |

What is your source for that, Ford guy? I would be interested. |

Simply google "1979 Ford LTD" and see how many results you get, including brochure pictures. |
◊ 2011-04-20 18:19 |
Well, that's always useful for illustrations but most are modern photos of cars that could have been altered over the years. Do you have any authoritative source that says only the '79's had clear lenses? (All the brochures and period photos I have seen show them with amber lenses and a hood ornament.) |

I haven't found a brochure or anything else particularly authoritative. This is just based on observation and google searches and finds such as these: http://www.productioncars.com/gallery.php?car=1507&make=Ford&model=LTD But c'mon, this does carry some weight You can't tell me that all of those cars that came up on the google images search have been altered the exact same way. However, as I said, I don't have anything particularly concrete to support my argument. Just observation and what I can find online. The cars with the clear lenses only come up when I search for 1979 models, not later ones. As I said, I don't know if only the very earliest of models had them or if they were some sort of special option. Heck, for all I know I could be completely wrong. But the evidence that I do have indicates that at some point, some of these early LTD's seem to have had clear lenses. |

odd as this Salesman literatureshows only the Landau and the Country Squire getting the hood ornament. and both this 1979 LTD Brochure and this 1979 Ford LTD Postcard show the clear parking lights |
◊ 2011-04-20 20:06 |
Here is a link to the last page of the 1979 LTD brochure: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" You will note under standard equipment that a hood ornament is the last item listed under the LTD section. As far as the other illustrations are concerned, the lamps either do show amber or the lamps are burning making it difficult to tell. -- Last edit: 2011-04-20 20:30:51 |

They're clear Commander, have a little faith in us |
◊ 2011-04-20 21:19 |
I wasn't doubting your source for the hood ornaments I was just saying that it was odd that the Salesman Literature that I linked differed. as for the other photos they show amber lamps, shining through clear lenses. If the lenses were Amber they would be the same color as the Sidemarker -- Last edit: 2011-04-20 21:21:24 |

OK, folks. We've both supported our positions. What we agree on is this is either a '79 or '80 so we will leave listed as a '79 since it is the first of 2 possible years. Thanks for the discussion, guys. |

This obviously a 1979 Ford LTD country Squire with the wood trim painted over. Now there, this is settled. |

The same LTD Wagon with clear turn signals and no wood siding. /vehicle_832622-Ford-LTD-Wagon-1980.html /vehicle_287419-Ford-LTD-Wagon-74H-1980.html /vehicle_485186-Ford-LTD-Wagon-74H-1980.html /vehicle_398340-Ford-LTD-Wagon-74H-1980.html Last time it came up we decided to call it an 80. |
