Wasn't the 353 estate called Tourist? Was it part of a state-controlled brainwashing programme to make everyone think they had to buy caravans?

@dsl: Making camping-vacations was for DDR-citizens the best way to make quite individual vacations. Hotel- or guesthouse-rooms were an absolute scarce commodity in the DDR (private self-catering accomodations or B&B's haven existed legally, resp. were all listed and reserved by authorities).

And Camping was nearly the only way to make vacations abroad ("abroad" means their next COMECON-neighbours, the only countries, where they were allowed to go). Though they could travel there, they still had big money problems. The exchange of the DDR-Mark to other COMECON-currencies was very restricted, so staying in a real hotel was not affordable for DDR-people. Very popular for DDR-Campers was the Lake Balaton in Hungary. Also due the fact, that they could stay there alongside Western tourists.

Unfortunately the officially beloved Socialist sister-peoples had a Capitalistic mind :o DDR-Germans with their worthless "Alu-Chips"-currency had always been second-class-people. Western tourists were always and everywhere preferred. Every day in every COMECON-country it happend thousandfold, that, when Western people have looked into a full restaurant, the DDR-guests were kicked immediately out by the waiters.
