1963 - Oval clear front turn signals, not amber like the 1964 models. 1963 was also the last year of the small rear window.

The plates on the VW van look to be New Jersey as this scene occurs on a Manhattan street. The opening of this film has some brief shots of Montreal where it starts out, but the majority of the film after the titles occurs in Manhattan. You can see the red and yellow taxi in the one screen capture. The red and yellow taxis were right before the Taxi Commission mandate in 1967 that all New York cabs be a uniform yellow. Other films of the 1950s and 1960s that have Manhattan locations feature such "less than all-yellow" taxis. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961, plus Audrey Hepburn again!) exits a red and yellow 1960 Ford taxi on Fifth Avenue, and "North By Northwest" (1959) shows various taxis in yellow and red or yellow and green are two examples I can think of offhand.
