 Maker's name 'Matrot' (France).

From their website it looks like a sugar beet harvester to me.

This is the Matrot M41H (however it the 1980s or 1990s the models were probably not the same.

 I can confirm that it is a Matrot MT 05 side elevator 6 row sugar beet harvester.
I used to work for the company and a little extra bit for you all is that this was actually filmed at the company that imported them at the time, Melford Machinery. That later was taken over by Matrot Uk from 1987 till 2004.

It is just south of Bury St Edmunds on the Sudbury road at a place called Cockfield. Lovejoy was filmed all round this area.
