1962+ Vauxhall VX 4/90 [FB]. Strange to see a Vauxhall with a German 'Zoll'-plate...

Parallel rather than the 'notched' side flash from 1963.

Thanks guys for identifying it, you really are unbeatable! I've been puzzling over this car for days. The distinctive German oval 'Zoll' plate is, ironically, appropriate for this vehicle in the film. 'Kati kourasmena palikaria' is a film no-one outside of Greece has probably ever heard of, but it is quite popular for the Greeks, a film from the 'classic era' of Greek film (roughly 1955 to 1965). Good, clean family fun by first rate actors! In the film, Dinos Diamantidis, a 52 year-old who does his best to prove he has not grown old, falls in love with young Korina Maltezou, at least 30 years his junior. She seems to be returning his love but, later, it is revealed that, instead of being the well-bred daughter of a rich family of ex-pat Greeks Diamantidis believes her to be, she, her mother and their friend Voulis Zoras (a.k.a. 'Kounelas'), who initially introduces the pair of women to Dinos, are a bunch of crooks trying to extract a large sum of money from Diamantidis. The daughter 'playing-up' to his love is, of course, part of the ploy.

The car in the picture is driven by Voulis (with the two women as passengers) as they make their first appearance. They have, supposedly, just arrived in Greece from abroad (the suggestion is that they came from Switzerland, although, of course, the Zoll plate is German) so Voulis driving a vehicle with temporary, customs plates is appropriate. In reality, of course, I expect the film crew borrowed a car from a business importing and selling used cars into Greece (this was quite common in the 1960s and well beyond, especially for cars coming from Germany). A Vauxhall is, of course, not one's first thought of an import car from Germany, but then again I think this particular type were moderately succesful all over Europe. Also, if they were not very succesful in Germany, the few that made it over would soon make their way out of the country again, I guess.

I was not surprised by the Zoll plate as such, but by a Vauxhall having it ;) As far as I now these Vauxhalls (and this applies to almost all Vauxhalls) were never sold in Germany.

Actually I think the Zollkennzeichen is fake; the font looks wrong. Nice Ford Consul Cortina on the right.

For me the Zoll-plates looks rather faked. The letter-font seems strange, even it's a blurry pic.

As DynaMike says, Vauxhalls weren't sold in Germany. One exception: the Vauxhall Chevette. For any reason it was sold parallel to the Opel Kadett C here.

Well, I suppose the Zoll plates could be fakes, screwed on by the Greek film crew in place of ordinary Greek plates, consistent with the story line of the people in the car having just arrived from abroad. As I said, they are supposed to have just arrived from Switzerland, not Germany, but no-one in Greece had ever seen Swiss Zoll plates (if they exist), whilst German ones were a common sight, as I seem to remember from my childhood. Probably easier to fake, if indeed they are fake ones...

Chris40, care to set up a new page for the Ford Consul Cortina on the right? Perhaps for the car behind it, too, although it seems (to me) very hard to ID. Plenty of other secondary vehicles on this movie, I'll try and post pics of them, too, although they were not as mysterious to me as the two I've already posted. In the end I managed to ID the Olds 98 myself, but the Vauxhall 4/90 really was a mindbreaker. I said to myself 'Vauxhall' but couldn't find the model and the German Zoll plates added to the confusion, since, as many of you rightly pointed out, a Vauxhall is not the first car to spring to mind when one sees German plates!

To be honest, yannis, I don't really know how to! The Consul Cortina is from 1963+. If you're adding more vehicles there's nothing to stop you using the same cap again for it, so far as I know.

@yannis: as these noticeable oval Zoll-plates were often to see in foreign countries, some people have thought, that they are typical German plates. We have several movies here, often US-made, but not all, where "German" or any other foreign ("exotic" :D ) car have these oval Zoll-plates, often fakes.

P.S.Sure, every country has it's own export-plates, Switzerland, too. Very good to see in African or Middle Asian countries. There they still are in use after the expiring-dates. The local police has no idea about them (the expiring date is remarked, anyways) so they let them drive on. Without insurance...
Many expired export-plates from a plenty of countries I've seen in Tunisia and the Canary Islands. Some with selfmade stickers. In Namibia I've cseen a Mercedes G with sticker-less German plates (so no valid registration) and a Hymer-Campmobile with German export-plates, where the driver has cutted off with a tin-scissors the part with expiring date.

Once my Swedish friend has asked me "Hey, what's the strange German plate, someone in my town is driving with? It has a yellow stripe on the side and a blue sticker"
I told him "Hold a big distance to it and don't come to close. It's a definetely expired 5-day-short-time plate".

A while ago I saw a 1990s Mitsubishi (IIRC) with remade German export plates (without the expiry date) parked quite near my home. Then it popped up parked on the lot of a specialist sports car dealer round the corner whose usual fare is tuned Benzes and Beemers. :)
