This scene was the reenactment of the shootout between the Bureau Of Investigation (Now the Federal Bureau of Investigation) and John Dillinger and his gang that occurred at the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters near Mercer, Wisconsin on the night of the 22nd April 1934. In reality, the shootout begun when the agents open fired on a car containing three unarmed Civilian Corp workers, John Hoffman, Eugenie Boisneau and John Morris who were leaving after having dinner at the lodge. Unlike the scene depicted, in the first shots, Boisneau was shot and killed and Morris and Hoffman were shot and wounded but like the scene, the workers' car was a Chevrolet, it was a 1933 coupe model. It was determined that the workers didn't hear the agents' orders to stop as the radio in their Chevrolet was on. The shootout resulted in the deaths of an FBI agent and a civilian, four wounded including the other two civilians and the escape of the entire Dillinger Gang as well as the FBI coming under severe criticism and calls for the FBI director, J Edgar Hoover's resignation and the suspension of the head of the FBI Chicago Branch, Agent Melvin Purvis. -- Last edit: 2021-12-27 13:03:57 |
