The Willys MB could always be a Ford GPW. They are almost indistingishable. As Willys is the constructor and Ford only built it in licence, I will name it Willys MB. At that time 'Jeep' was only a nickname, therefore in inverted kommas.

most of the "Jeeps" in this movie were the postwar French Hotchkiss version. Two had Ford Escort engines, gearboxes and handbrakes, intended to be used in a chase sequence, later cut out of the film..both these Jeeps were sold at Beltring rally in 2004,made about 2 grand each i believe.

One of my jeeps were used in this film along with my dodge ambulance, and it was indeed a willys MB jeep, i rescued it many years ago from a french farm building after it had been dragged there after being damaged in the Bocage region after the D Day landings. It still had all its original markings etc and i restored the jeep using only WW2 parts, so keeping the vehicle totally original. My jeep was driven by tom hanks in between shooting scenes and my ambulance was on the beach and during several other scenes through out the film.
There are a lot of misconceptions about the "wartime jeep" willys and ford both built the jeep in almost equal numbers but using their own unique marks on each model. IE: ford used the ford script logo stamped on their parts, but the two companies produced the same vehicle, and consequenty during the war, both jeep models were using parts from either company as all were interchangable, and its very rare indeed to find a complete wartime jeep that had every single part of its makeup from either just willys or Ford.
After the war the french army were given all remaining jeeps in france and gradually began to strip and rebuild them using either willys or ford parts as they became available, then hotchkiss gained the licence to build the jeep and in the early days, all hotchkiss jeeps were rebuilt willys or ford jeeps, gradually hotchkiss started manufacturing their own parts but also were using willys and ford parts still, so its not uncommon to find hotchkiss jeeps with parts fitted from all three manufacturers.
Hotchkiss built and rebuilt jeeps at La Maltourney and angouleme in france as well as some other smaller plants.
Hotchkiss continued building jeeps into the late 1960,s as this vehicle was so versatile, and was used extensively by the french in Vietnam, Algeria, the congo etc etc and on peacekeeping mission with NATO. Wether or not the jeep in question is willys, hotchkiss or ford, the fact remains that it is a jeep, a proper jeep, and thats all that matters!!

I know is a very late reply but 8 years on still looking for any information to help with this. I Also own a Jeep that came straight back from the film. Its actually a Hotchkiss M201 which were all made to look like the original Willys Jeep for the film. The Jeep was used in one of the opening beach scene where you can see Tom Sizemore Driving towing the trailer and Tom hanks and his men all on board to. The frustrating thing is the then led onto a full scene that was totally cut out the film and still today cant find any other footage of the Jeep. Apart from the hood number and info we got when we bought it. I also wanted to 100% confirm that this was the Jeep that was in that scene. It wasn't till I bought the Saving Private Ryan book where there is a full 2 page Picture of them both in the jeep and you can see on the American Invasion Flag a large Oil stain in a distinctive shape. Check this with the one of My Jeep and its 100% the same. I have also left all the camera Mounts on the Jeep where it was used to film allot of scenes and was driving round the set by Tom Hanks. These mounts are no more sophisticated than scaffold clips but obviously did the job and kept them on for that extra bits of its history.

I have wrote to Dreamworks to try ad find more info on this Vehicle and had no response there must be the deleted scenes out there somewhere but every-time I hit a brick wall.

Your best bet would probably be to contact Plusfilm Services, who supplied military vehicles for the film.
