All Toyota compact trucks have been badged as 'Hilux' outside US/Canadian market since Toyota also sold other small truck models their at the same time as well and the term 'pickup' is too generic to use as a name so Hilux is used as an identifier of their compact pickup truck in the same way as Ford calls its trucks, F-150, F-250, Ranger, etc. not just Ford 'Pickup'... For example, here is another small Toyota pickup called the "Timangi" (scroll to near bottom of page): http://www.tuulilasi.fi/valokeila/?article=116068&print=true

'Nova' (New) 2006 Toyota Hilux as sold in Brasil : http://www.carhouse.com.br/carros/hilux2006/hilux_modelos.asp

They were in the 1970's, and they definitley were in 1973. Check out the book "Pickup & Van Spotter's Guide: 1945-1992," by Tad Burness if you can get it.

That is a 76-78 toyota pickup. The 73-74 models did come in the u.s. with hilux badges on the front fenders, but they're titled as a "pickup". the last year the title would say "hilux" in the u.s. is 1972.
