This car is the Group 6 (prototype)1970 Abarth SE 019, called SP P. I believe this picture is made during the Circuito del Mugello race. Entirely raced on public roads with five laps of 66.2 km's each! This race was won by Arturo Merzario in his Abarth, which I think, is pictured here. Abarth entered four of these cars,with an excellent driver line up: Leo Kinnunen, Gijs van Lennep and Nino Vaccarella being the other drivers. The two litre SP(group 5)type was entered originally for Johannes Ortner, but was shared with Vaccarella after he crashed his car. This last edition of the Mugello road race was an Abarth clean sweep: Merzario, Kinnunen, van Lennep being the first three. Group 5 was won by "Pogo" in a privately owned 2000SP (5th in the overall standings). The SE 019 was made in two configuration FB (Fuori Bordo, with the engine hanging out in the back) and MC (Motore Centrale, mid engined). Merzario and van Lennep used the FB configuration in this race. The fourcylinder two litre carburetter engine was capable of approx. 260 bhp |
