In this episode, they identify the truck as a 1977 Dodge D150. The man who owns it is a serial killer, using it to stalk down people on foot and running them over with it. The reason it has a 90's grill is because he changes the grill after each hit to cover the damage. They show him changing it in fact, and he has a whole pile of grills lying on the floor from the 1970s and 80s.

Actually they say it´s a 1979 D-100. Just saw the episode a couple of days ago :-)

Is it just me or does something about that front assembly look fake? It looks a bit computer animated to me.

Hmm, I´m not sure. There are a lot of scenes, where you can see the Dodge with that fascia. I don´t see any reasons why they should make a computer animation for that car.

So, did they say the correct model year on the show?

They said it and you could see parts of the car documents reading 1979 D-100. I do understand that the truck has a "wrong" fascia but Diesel Jim already explained why.
When you look very hard you see it:

I'm only playing advocate's devil here, but does anybody know if it's easily possible to replace the front end of the older pre-Ram trucks with those of the 1981+ models? Also, when did those side mirrors first come into use?

Body panels were all the same from the 1970s until the 1994 style came out. The mirrors are a little new for a 1979, the ones on that truck can also be powered. I believe they would have come out in the mid to late 1980s.

***SPOILER***

I seem to recall the killer being an auto body expert, so it would be very plausible that he changed the mirrors to the newer style. He is a paraplegic, ever since he was involved in an accident that killed his wife. It is possible that he would have wanted power mirrors so as to adjust them more easily, being that he has limited mobility, and also to easier observe his surroundings to watch for police or victims. Just playing Devil's Advocate to your Devil's Advocate, or Angel's Advocate, whatever you want to call it being that it's a double negative. :D

The 2nd to last thumbnail shows the big collision the Dodge had with the new Suburban. I was suprised they didn't cahnge to an older Chevy when the collision happened.

The mirrors are not stock. They angle up due to the base not matching the contour of the door. Also if you zoom the first thumbnail you can see rivets along edge of mirror head. These look like the stainless steel mirrors GM used in the 80's. Dodge mirrors were chrome over plastic, thus no rivets. Also, the truck in the first thumbnail is not the same year as the crash truck. You can tell by the difference in body lines over fender wells.

I'm not really a "Dodge Man", but you gotta admit that's a damn good looking truck.

By the way, can anyone tell if it's a two wheel drive or a four wheel drive?

Rams were extensively reskinned for 1981. The doors might possibly interchange, but the bed components and front sheetmetal don't interchange.

The front end does not have a drive axle. So its rear-wheel drive only.

The sheetmetal was mostly all new for 1981 but was very similar to the 72-80 trucks. You can swap front fenders from a 72 to a 93 for example but the body lines in the doors won't match the fenders and possibly hit. If you change the doors as well though they will fit. The only part of the cab that changed during the model run was that the area above the rear windows was squared off. It is possible to put a 70's grille on a 81-up truck and vise versa but they won't fit quite right on the fender edges. In some scenes of this episode the truck did have 72-80 front fenders with the 91-93 style grille.

if you put the doors and front fenders from a 80's or 90's on a 70's truck the body lines will match up. here is a pic of a 79 ramcharger with 83 doors and fenders. we also cut the top in half to make it a half top. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3368/3279094321_5d26bf9816_o.jpg also in one scene it shows a interior shot and the truck has a 74-80 dash in it. and in another scene you can see the truck has 72-80 taillights.

It's a 2x4 dressed up to look 4x4.

This grill will fit older trucks but you have to unbolt the fenders, change the core support, and bolt everything back on. One guy who knows what he's up to could do it in a day.

The grill is aftermarket, it doesn't say "DODGE" across it.

It kind of looks like the right side of the grille around the headlight was damaged and popped out.
