Chrome mirrors means top-of-the-tree Connoisseur trim, maybe Connoisseur SE.
Gamer wrote 2002.

Why?? Estate was launched March 2001. The next listed update event was May 2002 - a minor tweaking of mirrors and alloys.

... which proves that the Gospel According To VIN Numbers is just as capable of producing useless drivel as any other information source. The quest to find absolutely reliable and relevant information for every situation will probably never succeed.

tore-40, back me up on this.
(Wait, I succeeded in proving a point, did I not? I can't really tell)

The VIN is for a 2002 LHD 2.0 diesel (204D2 engine, CDT - as the CDTi had 96 kW) with a manual gearbox, from the Longbridge plant, Connoisseur trim, all stated by the manufacturer and coded in the VIN.

Verified in every detail, it seems

But note:

So registered in mid-August, therefore by the time it got to Norway it was a few months old. My Rover 75 book gives chassis 219601 as early June production from #219627 being approx 11 June. So if you want to call this a 2002, you're 7 months premature in real world terms, not to mention the broadcast date which seems to have been summer 2001 (although imdb is vague).

Plus you deny the chance to highlight the May 2002 mirror/wheels change, which in some cases can be recognised. So blindly following the VIN produces artificially skewed "dates" and removes an element of precision which we could otherwise apply. Raw data always should be interpreted (not just decoded) to ensure it provides the best reference.

So I'll ping the question back - what do we really gain by entering this as 2002?? I could also pose further questions that if a June 2001 car is regarded as 2002, (a) what opportunity does that leave for any Tourer to be regarded as 2001, despite being produced for 10 months in the 2001 calendar year? and (b) what applies for Tourers should also presumably apply for saloons, so do you want to erase 2001 designations for them as well?

Connoisseur? So well-built trim, that even Ingo would appreciate?

The year was given by the manufacturer, not by me. If you wish to ignore that info, by all means.

It has been customary to list on imcdb by the year of visual changes, often in this case by the model year as well; then the specific year of production, if known, often by registration docments; then by the model year, if given, usually by the VIN or the older chassis number system. Nothing new in this matter, remember US cars can be the 'next' year as early as in February. In fact, the model year is defined so that it only needs to cover January 1. So if you could check the VIN of these early cars they should probably read a '1'

May have been a model year change (doesn't the UK use model years?) June would be the time that the next year's models (or the features would be coming out. If it wasn't universal, than at least Rover used model years for their products at some point.

Just consider this: If the model year identifier of the VIN didn't mean just model year - then the 10th digit would simply be changed at the assembly line when entering a new year, by the first weekday of the new year, wouldn't it?

VIN is clearly a 2002 MY built early on in the run. Rover uses MYs in their VIN. I agree with tore-40, gamer, & rts here. If we ever found March built Estates I would like to see if this model was released early in the 2001 calendar year for the 2002 MY. Mercedes does this A LOT. Plus the VIN and build date dictates a 2002 no matter what way you spin the data :/ Updated based on this information.
