This scene was the reenactment of the Indiana State Prison Breakout that occurred at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Indiana on the afternoon of the 26th September 1933.

In reality, 10 prisoners including several of Dillinger's associates escaped and unlike this scene, Dillinger wasn't there, he was held at the Allen County Jail in Lima, Ohio awaiting trial for the robbery of a bank that occurred at Bluffton, Ohio on the 14th August 1933 and while Walter Dietrich was one of the escapees, he wasn't killed during the escape, he went on a spree with the Dillinger Gang before later being recaptured and was released on the parole on the 8th January 1953.

As well as an associate of Dillinger, Dietrich was also an associate of former Prussian Army officer and armed robber, Herman "Baron" Lamm who was considered as a "pioneer in bank robbery" as Lamm planned his robberies with military-like precision and tactics, including casing the banks prior to committing the robberies, swapping getaway cars or swapping the number plates of the getaway cars.

After the Michigan City Breakout, on the evening of the 27th September 1933, Dillinger's associates and escapees, Harry Pierpont, Charles Makley, Russell Clark, and Edward "Ed" Shouse had travelled from Indiana and ended up in Hamilton, Ohio where they were joined by Dillinger's associate and fellow Michigan City parolee, Harry Copeland and begun planning to break Dillinger out of the Allen County Jail.

Realizing they need money to break Dillinger out, Makley, Pierpont, Clark, and Copeland decided to rob another bank, Makley's then suggested the First National Bank as a target as it was located in Makley's home town of St. Mary, Ohio.

A week later on the afternoon of the 3rd October 1933, Pierpont, Makley, Clark, Shouse, Dillinger's associate, John "Red" Hamilton and Pierpont's girlfriend, Mary Kinder (who was filling in as a getaway driver for Copeland who was sick) had arrived at the bank in two cars.

At 2:40pm, Pierpont, Makley and Clark entered the bank and robbed it while Shouse and Hamilton waited nearby, resulting in $11,000 being taken in the robbery.

As the bank was closed at the time of the robbery and had new bank notes on hand for the bank's reopening, the gang had wash and dry the notes to make the appearance that the bank notes were used to pass them easily.

A week after the robbery, on the 10th October 1933, Pierpont picked up Dillinger's girlfriend, Billie Frechette and set her up in a apartment with Mary Kinder at Cincinnati, Ohio.

The following day on the 11th October 1933, Pierpont, Makley, Clark, Shouse, Hamilton and Copeland left Cincinnati and travelled to Lima, arriving on the 12 October 1933 (Columbus Day).

Disguised as police officers, Pierpont, Makley, Clark, Hamilton, Shouse, and Copeland drove to the jail, where Pierpont, Makley and Clark entered the jail and asked Allen County Sheriff, Jesse Sarber who was sitting at the front desk to see Dillinger.

Suspicious of the three, Sheriff Sarber asked "Let me see your credentials?" to which Pierpont then replied, "Here they are" before producing a pistol and fired twice, hitting Sarber once in the abdomen.

After shooting Sarber, they bashed him repeatedly until Sarber's wife got the keys to the cells, Clark, Makley and Pierpont then went down to the cells where they freed Dillinger who then casually asked, "What kept you(?)" before locking Sarber's wife and Allen County Deputy Sheriff, Wilbur Sharp in the cell and making their escape.

Sheriff Sarber later succumbed to his wounds 90 minutes after Dillinger escaped with the gang.
