According to the DVLA Database, the vehicle details for HY 2439 are:

Date of First Registration 27 04 1931
Date of Last V5 Issue 17 06 1987

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 5060CC

So it is a 1931 Speed Six.

No production six cylinder Cricklewood Bentley ever had a cubic capacity that low, except the 50 Four Litres made shortly before the original company went broke in 1930/31. The vehicle in the picture may well be one of the 171 Speed Six cars, in which case its capacity is 6597 cc, irrespective of what the DVLA may think. The reason for no recent V5 is that the car is recorded as being owned by a Bentley Drivers Club member in the USA.

If you like large engines, in order to be able to guarantee 100 mph no matter how big the limousine fitted to the chassis, the company produced the greatest of all Bentleys which was the 7982 cc 8 litre. Totally Stutz proof.

In 1931 some outfit called Rolls-Royce bought the remains of the Bentley company and the progress to becoming a subsidiary of VW began.

A quote, possibly apocryphal, from W O Bentley: 'There is no substitute for litres' ... he could have been wrong, though, as Mercedes-Benz proved ...

Notwithstanding whether it is a 6L or 5L, I was chagrined to hear the gnashing of gears and the poor clutch takeup by the driver, actor Ian Carmichael in the BBC Series, "Lord Peter Whimsey: Five Red Herrings"! He's a fine dresser, almost a fine speaker (he does use the word "ain't" often), but I would not lend him my car! Once, when it was ensconced in the USA, I was able to drive the famous Bentley Speed Six, the Blue Train Bentley, and I quickly learned about gears and clutch takeup. Also, that car had an identical exhaust note to HY 2439, so I'd opine that the 6L engine was installed. But, all in all, these cars are my favorite of all time--their flair, power, style and beauty are unparalleled. And if you also like them, get this movie--many scenes of the car being driven about the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. Great fun!
