This scene was a reenactment of the capture of Mesrine and his mistress and accomplice, Jeanne Schneider who were arrested in the US on the 16th July 1969. According to the investigators, after the failed kidnapping of their former boss, grocery and textile millionaire, Georges Deslauriers, on the 26th June 1969, both Mesrine and Schneider had fled Quebec and travelled to the US. After arriving in the US, Mesrine and Schneider met with an elderly lady named Evelyne Le Bouthillier who had gave them shelter. Four days later on the 30th June, Le Bouthillier was later found strangled to death at her home, police investigating her murder suspected that both Mesrine and Schneider were the ones who strangled her. Acting on a tip supplied by an accomplice of Mesrine and Schnieder, a few weeks later, on the 16th July, police had cornered Mesrine and Schnieder and were arrested. In reality, the capture of both Mesrine and Schnieder took place in Texarkana on the Arkansas side, not in Arizona before being extradited back to Quebec. Mesrine was convicted and sentenced to ten years imprisonment, but a few weeks later, Mesrine broke out only to be recaptured the following day. After being recaptured, Mesrine and Schneider were charged with Le Bouthillier's murder, but were acquitted due to a lack of evidence. |
