Is it one from Mr Goodall's collection? The guy once had 49 exemplars and was sentenced to get rid of 40 of them. |

They should have destroyed this instead of the FSO or Marina, as there's far more of those still around and they're much cheaper to buy. Not to mention it's an icon of communism and the Cold War, so having more emphasis on it would have fitted in with the segment well. It's also an AWFUL car and technically far worse than any of the other Soviet era vehicles featured there. |

"A man who spent years building up a collection of classic cars has been told he must get rid of most of them." Hahahahahaha, CLASSIC CARS? WHAT?! |

That is not a collection, that is a junkyard! @ecclefechan: What´s the fun of destroying a car anyway? |

Mr Goodhall... Least said, soonest mended. I disagree with ecclefechan's comment "It's also an AWFUL car and technically far worse than any of the other Soviet era vehicles featured there". As a daily driver of a Trabant 601 I will agree that it is not a luxury car, it's not fast, it's not in any way sporty but it is just as good as any other soviet car, and it did better in the legendary moose test then the a-class mercedes (which fell over). In many respects it's simplicity put's it a nose ahead of it's rivals. The Wartburgs (for instance) another IFA vehicle... Water cooled, and the engine has 7 moving parts... The Trabant, air cooled and only 5 moving parts in the engine. Simplicity itself to run and repair. The small 594.5cc powerplant is comparativley clean despite everyone claiming 2-strokes are filthy... They say that becasue unlike the invisible gasses produced by modern 4-stroke engines, the 2-stroke produces a visible smoke. Basicaly, modern vehicles brush it under the carpet. Destroying a Trabant because its a symbol of communism is like destroying the Elgin Marbles because you don't like Greeks. Pointless destruction is always abhorrant. The segemnt of Top Gear did little for anyone who owns a soviet car, and proved to some, that Clarkson, and sadly by association May and Hammond know a lot less than they would have us believe. |

Hello Mitto! Please tell me more about your Trabant, is it RHD? |

My 601... Is left hand drive. It's a 1984 model with the usual 594.5cc 2-Stroke engine, not mint by any means, but it just keeps on running and running. I paid £250 for it last year when my petrol prices forced my Volvo off the road. Recenlty I bought another 601, this time a 1981 model, the inside is very poor, but the structure is sound. I thas no MOT, and has not run in about 10 years. I paid £50 for it. I have my heart sen on a P50 that I am aware of, but that's a real wreck. To stop it before it starts, I am not driving these cars to avoid pying road tax in the UK. Only pre 1973 cars are exempt. My girlfriends Wartburg Knight tourist is tax free though. (she has 2). Anyone want to know more... mittomittomitto@hotmail.co.uk Mail me. |

They must have spent tens of thousands of £ destroying vehicles in this show, and have destroyed many vehicles which are much rarer and worth a lot more than this. There's still lots of Trabants around (particularly in Bulgaria and Romania) and it's less than 20 years since they last produced them, so they aren't very old. I don't really understand why anybody on this side of the former iron curtain has any interest in them. -- Last edit: 2009-07-28 02:57:43 |

130... You actually bothered to do and HPI check ? I fear you wasted your time. Still... Good stuff all the same ! Problem is, with Trabi's... It could be anything. It could have been registered as anything. I've discovered the only way to really ID a Trabi is to actually see it at first hand, ignore the build plate and the DVLA, and actually look at the age of the parts, the width of the door pillars, the type of steering etc... All these things give Trabi age away much better than an HPI check will. |
