Could this be South Africa version?

It's for sure a Brazilian version (to identify by the windows), but I don't know, if VW of ZA in Uitenhage has also assembled that ones and not only the orgin German Bus.

That Mazda seems a rare car isn't it?

Not very common indeed, and my father used to have two of these (in 1976 a bronze coloured one with beige vinul roof, in 1978 a gold coloured one)...

They did indeed assemble it as a "special edition" to commemorate something, but only a limited number were built - can quite remember the date and the occasion, but I guess it was around 1977/8.

They were very popular in South Africa, and still seen on the roads sometimes. This model went a long way in building a reputation for Mazda as sporty, never-say-die vehicles here locally. Obviously the RX-2 model with its Wankel engine had a lot to do with the "sporty" part, but did not much contribute to the rest...

No, reasonably common, but very sort after by aficionados and serious collectors alike.
