Previously described as a Leyland, rather than an Austin

This is a sneaky one, a Dec 78+ Mini Van 95 (painted over logo in grille) with Nov 79+ L pack (twin sun visors - 5th thumb ep2.03, which also shows May 76+ rocker switches and steering wheel), carefully debadged, painted over and all exterior mirrors removed - by this time they were very un-60s black plastic things on the doors.

This was the Leyland era, but they were usually known as just Mini.

What about these two? Should these entries be combined?

Looking across those entries, it seems several different grey Mini vans were used in different series for this role, which Hartybeats says was seen in 50+ episodes. Comparison points I'm using are mirrors, bonnet badges, and anything else I can spot; there are also a couple of comments on the pages about folk buying ex-HB vans off ebay etc.

I'm guessing at least 4 vans used
- this 1980+ 95 L as identified, seems self-contained. Note this remark on the 1978 page
mauriceoxford wrote This van was sold on eBay recently after the series ended .... The van was listed as a 1982 Mini 95 in the sale though

... which would/could match this one
- the "1964" Morris - presumably dated from the fake(?) plate - looks OK with the correct 61-69 bonnet badge. Slight quirk to mention in passing - wing mirrors on vans were always round, so they've been replaced at some stage with 70s chromed. Comment noted on that page that plate info gave 1098cc, so one of the vans - no idea which - has been re-engined.
- the "1978" page combines at least 2 vans. Main from 16.12 has 70+ bonnet badge, the unusual wing mirrors, and also the arch/sill trim from an estate. Otherwise it's normal 1970s. Comment noted on that page
Al_man wrote The van in main image at Scripps garage is a Leyland Mini 1000 van first registered 02 Jan 1978 and was used in Heartbeat (on show plates) from Series 10 to 18. I know this because I bought the van on Ebay in 2009 when they finished filming.

If this is the actual 78 mentioned, it's fine.
- again the "1978" page - the thumb from ep 11.07 has sliding windows fully open so looks like quarterlights which vans never did (nor did any other UK Mini). Looks like chrome rectangular mirrors and has hint of shiny sill/arch trim, so likely the 16.12 main again
- again the "1978" page - the thumb from ep 11.17 is a different example - hint of 60s Morris bonnet badge, black painted round wing mirrors as used from 1960 launch thru until late 70s; over-riders were normal option. This is the only picture which looks a normal 1960s example just like it might have left the factory.

Cunning producers could switch mirrors, badges and plates fairly easily if they could be bothered, but on what's visible there's 4 different ones. Pages could be combined now under "1964", 1978 and 1980 (or 1982 for mauriceoxford's comment above), but if there are going to be further deep trawls for more series, things could well be thrown into the air again.

With regard to grey police minivans that appeared in Heartbeat, for me the starting point has to be what appears onscreen and specifically in the first instance the registration of vehicles.

DTR239B appeared clearly identifiably by registration number in at least 3 episodes of Series 2 and may have appeared in one or more later episodes with the registration number not clearly visible.

PLF69 appeared clearly identifiably by registration number in at least 6 episodes of Series 4 and 5 and may have appeared in other episodes with the registration number not clearly visible.

CDN345C appeared clearly identifiably by registration number in at least 10 episodes of Series 6 and 7 and may have appeared in other episodes with the registration number not clearly visible.

669KAO appeared clearly identifiably by registration number in at least 20 episodes of Series 6 and 7 and appeared in at least 3 other episodes with the registration number not clearly visible.

BOA430B appeared clearly identifiably by registration number in over 50 episodes between Series 9 and 18 and appeared in at least 3 other episodes with the registration number not clearly visible.

For me, there should be a separate page for each of the above.

It is not inconceivable that more than one vehicle was used for any of the above five registration numbers and, at the moment, I do not have a suggestion about how IMCDB should deal with that.

Might me better to keep them on one, if theirs not too many differences

Let's see what happens if and when we get a full trawl of all HB eps. We tend to follow specific cars where they can be ID'd more than following plates, which particularly in this series are a minefield and frequently unreliable.

And if a full trawl of all eps is ever achieved the full page would be gigantic unless some fairly brutal merging is done. Smaller series we can and often do allow more flexibility for separating pages. At the moment we've got 4 different vans and a list of 5 plates used, which on a one-for-one basis could theoretically generate 20 pages of grey Mini vans, all filling one role. More vans could emerge from eps which have only been surface-scratched or not yet attempted, so we need to anticipate.

At the moment, what we've got on these Mini vans is probably as good as it can be. But it may well change as more candidates emerge, so nothing's fixed. Whatever we find we'll continue to try and pin down as precisely as we can, with or despite the help of the series producers, and present the situation as clearly as possible for whatever use anyone wants to make of it. If they want to slot the info into a different recording system from our practice, so be it - we'll no doubt absorb that point within our efforts to provide the desired info as far as we can within the practicalities.

I agree, dsl.

I don't really see how you can set up separate pages for vehicles known to carry registration marks that were never issued or never carried by that particular vehicle:

DTR239B: The "DTR" series was suffixed "C".

PLF69: Dating from 1954 and no longer on DVLA. Was it ever on a Mini van?

CDN345C: Issued new to, and last known, still assigned to a Hillman.
