1953 Studebaker - probably a Champion. According to the book it is impossible to tell the Champion and Commander apart. Not all cars had a model badge. The tristar badge on this car is a sign that it is from the first half of the year's production. |

It is a 1953 Studebaker Champion Regal Starlight Coupe. In 1953 the Champions and Commanders looked similar except for the model designation on the rear quarter panel.Champions bore a circle medallion with an S in the middle.Commanders had a V8 emblem .Furthermore ,Commanders had an 8 in thecenter of the hood and trunk emblem while Champions had an S,which appears to be the case here.Pillared coupes as this one were Starlights, hardtops Starliners |

Correct in all respects. The right thumbnail provides a good opportunity to point out '53 vs '54 rear differences. The '54 had the name bar raised up to the trunk lock level and read "Studebaker" on the left side of the lock and "Champion" or "Commander" on the right side. Also, notice the taillamp "crossbars". They were eliminated on all 1954 models. Pilou's comments on side emblems is correct for Starlite coups and Starliner hardtops. On sedans, there was no circle-S on Champions. On Commanders, a V-8 emblem appeared on the front fender vent doors. -- Last edit: 2010-02-15 18:23:08 |
