I deliberately used 'VAZ' and not 'VAZ Lada' as the makers name.

As there seems to be somme name confusion, I dug deeper into the subject.

This scene is playing in Russia. The Russian name of the maker is VAZ (Volzhsky Automobilny Zavod) and the model gets, like all the other Russian vehicles, a number: 2107. It is the latest version based on the Fiat 124, the first being the 2101. In Russia it was sold under its own brand name of 'Zhiguli', hence the correct name in Russia is 'Zhiguli 2107', which I will use.

In other countries the maker name 'Lada' was used and the model name 'Nova' or 'Riva', depending on the country, often followed by the number (e.g. Lada Nova 2107).

Today the company is called AvtoVAZ.

Of course all Russian names are transcripts from the cyrillic writing -- in other languages writing differs.

That becomes quite complicated :/
We should rename the other cars currently listed as VAZ Lada then...

I think we had this discussion few months ago... That is a fact, this Lada were named Zhiguli in USSR, and the name seems to be still used since the new politic change in Russia in 1991... We first conclued to use the generic make name "VAZ Lada" for all the products made by Volzhsky Automobilny Zavod (now AvtoVAZ), with differences depending on the country were the vehicle belongs to, expressed in the type field... for example "VAZ Lada 1200" if the car is in a western country, "Vaz Lada Zhiguli 2101 if it is a russian one?... This classification had the advantage to include all the VAZ whatever there name, and make a link with the present VAZ (avtoVAZ) selled as Lada even in Russia (110/111/112 and Niva)... now the discussion is open again :D

It is not very important to keep them in the same make, since for example we split GM cars between Opel, Vauxhall, Chevrolet, Holden and some others. But we used "VAZ Lada" because it seemed so difficult to classify these cars, as you said.

Let me suggest an idea so that we don't have to make a compromise by using 'VAZ Lada'.

As we try to give the correct name for the country where the film was made (or is playing) we should, for this type of car, use 'Zhiguli' in Russia and 'Lada' elsewhere. That bit is easy, we have done it for makes, models and even nicknames of other cars already. Slightly more complicated is the search routine that should give all the links for 'Lada', 'Zhiguli', 'VAZ' and 'AvtoVAZ' if only one of these is typed in the search field. Also typical spelling mistakes ('AutoVAZ') and different transcriptions ('Shiguli') could be handled if a look-up-table is included. The search engine compares the typed in name with the LUT (could be an extra database table) and gets all the possible names back as a result. With that result the already existing search routine extracts the links to all matching results.

What do you say? Would, of course, mean extra work for you, Antoine.

NB: The '2107' should be the model name, not the chassis number (even though this is identical). I probably forgot to change it back.

There are already some automatic correct links, like Alfa-Roméo -> Alfa-Romeo, Citroen -> Citroën, Mercedes -> Mercedes-Benz. So I can very easily add other replacement like that.
The only problem is to "merge" makes.
For that I was thinking to add a special page visible on the first page of the list of vehicles of a make. This would allow for example to explain on the VW page how the vehicles are listed (with the Beetle that do not have Beetle in their name). Or in the current case to put the links to Lada on the VAZ page and vice-versa.
We could also maybe add a "group" page, in addition of the "makes" page, that would list all the makes of a group. So a search on Lada would return VAZ, Lada, etc.
But it becomes very difficult since the groups change. I think to Ssangyong for example that was part of Daewoo before Chevrolet takes part in Daewoo, but that is now stand-alone.
Or maybe we could use this only to "unify" common makes, like Lada/VAZ, Opel/Vauxhall, Austin/Rover/Morris, etc. ?

But the only immediate problem is to rename Lada of the site. I already renamed the Lada of the french movies, but we still have to classify the remaining "VAZ Lada".

I've never been very satisfied with VAZ Lada definition for make, and I can only approve of discussion about this case. For exportation models, I think Lada designation is the proper category for it, the solution is Ok. But about Zhiguli, I find odd and a pity to occult VAZ name in designation make. I would have prefered to keep VAZ as make for inner russian (and ex soviet union influence countries)with Zhiguli as model name, added with number type of it, considering up to what I know that Zhiguli is a sort of popular brand name more than an official make name, but certainly a model name! ... :/

Not all countries used Lada designation. In Sweden it was VAZ.
