really a shame that they destroyed it :( this is one of the better, if not the best Lada! It really does its job as a 4x4 vehicle. This is much more useful than any stupid POS SUV (no offense meant to anybody who likes the Ford Expedition etc, because Fords still do good when it comes to riding off-road). Of course you may add the handling is bad (which is totally true) but this car does an excellent job, unlike a Cadillac Escalade, for instance, which would just get stuck in the mud after some minutes.

But the problem in Germany is to get an Escalade at all :D It's one of the worst sellers over here:

http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/fotostrecke-50275.html

Cadillac is trying it again. As they wrote, they are try to selling the actual range over the few shops, which have survived the bankrupcy of the Kroymans-company, which had organized the selling of Caddies over here. An own Cadillac-dependance doesn't exist any more since several years. Animatronixx knows, since how many years.

Escalades may still be the best Cadillacs in Germany in my opinion. But they are too expensive and too huge for european standards. But I just think that 'SUVs' are generally the most redundant cars which exist. Ford decided to discontinue the best car which they made in the last 20 years, the Crown Victoria. They still sell it to law enforcement agencies though. But the Crown Vic is a sedan, more than 4 metres long, and still doesn't put out as much emissions as an average SUV does! Especially when it comes to global warming, a Lada ist still a much better choice over any SUV, because you can really use it off-road and the emissions are not too bad (though Lada is yet not much of a role model when it comes to building modern cars with environmental-friendly motors.). SUVs are so useless because they are neither a sedan nor a middle-class car nor full-size cars nor real 4x4 vehicles. They are a mixture of a lot of automotive types, and are gas-guzzlers and generally too big for cities. The only good SUVs are the HUmmer and those produced by Ford, and yes, the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe are also an OK choice. But an Escalade is not in the least useful in the wilderness, I've seen documentaries about that. You could as well drive offroad with a Rolls-Royce, and it may even perform better than the Escalade, even though it does not claim to be a 4x4!

I seem to recall they closed their gates in 2003 (and shortly before I went there and saved a hearse full of brochures ;) ).

The Escalade could be a good offroader, but it lacks a few necessities for off road use. It’s actually kind of sad,
because the capability is there, but the designers & engineers sabotage its performance.

It has a more than adequate engine stuffed under the hood for the job (something no one can argue) as when it
comes to offroading, the more torque that can be distributed to the wheels, the better.

It has a robust automatic transmission to back the engine, with a numerically high first gear, which could make
for an excellent off road crawl ratio. Off road enthusiasts prefer a numerically high off road crawl.

It has a (G80) automatic locking rear differential, designed by Eaton. Most Escalade owners probably do not
know or care that their vehicle has one. Locking rear differentials provide excellent traction off road.

If a 4x4 does not have a locking rear differential, it should at least have a good limited-slip rear differential or
4-wheel electronic traction control system designed for off road use.

What does it lack for true off road use?

For one, a suspension system tuned for off road use. It’s tuned for on-road soft ride comfort. I do not know the wheel
travel specs, but I imagine they are decent for a factory vehicle. It lacks an effective traction control system programmed
for off road use. It’s also missing a proper 4-wheel-drive system which is key. The transfer case (or transfer gearbox) is
single-speed only, permanently engaged in high range gearing. No low range gearing is available and there is no way to
lock the center clutch pack inside the transfer case. Low-lock capability is essential for 4-wheel-drive systems designed
for off road use.

The front bumper would need to be re-sculpted to improve off road approach angles. Skid plates would also need to be offered.
