that sloping back identifies it as a "Bren Carrier"..note..its not the Universal Carrier......probably Dunkirk newsreel..thats where most went and never came back...they were replaced by the universal carrier..which had straight rear armour as opposed to the sloped in picture |

Indeed, the Universal Carrier is the No.2 Mk.I/Mk.II while this is the forerunner No.1 Mk.I produced 1936 by Vickers derived from the VA D50 light tractor designed by John Carden and Vivian Loyd of Vickers in 1935. The No.1 existed in four different versions (therefore not named 'Universal'), as Medium Machine Gun Carrier, Bren Gun Carrier, Scout Carrier and Cavalry Carrier. Even though pictures of this early version are hard to come by I would agree that this is the version for the Bren light machine gun. |
