Back in the old days when new cars were really expensive here people would buy from dealers in Holland or other mainland European countries. The 156 was one of the most popular models for this. I remember reading a story from someone picking up a 156 and seeing one with the big wing. They asked the dealer what kind of people are stupid enough to buy one with that... "Ah... That would be British people" the dealer replied.

:D I remember very few with the big wing indeed, and mostly with foreign plates. I don't dislike it (it was done for homologation purposes in Super Production category) but I much prefer the more discreet "Sport Pack 1", with the normal shape spoiler, which was far more popular (or no spoiler at all) :D however I don't like (aftermarket) transparent rear lights.

That's not a chav hoodie, but the clothing of a Blessed Cheesemakers, the highly skilled creators of the noble and ancient Bog Butter.

These rear wings were used on the production based class b 156:s in the British touring car championship in 2002, to improve aerodynamics and car handling, and some road cars also got them installed 🆒👍😁
