Nearly missed this - it's a Mk2 or Mk3 van with French plate and panelled rear side window, and with vertical B-pillar is based on a 4 door with rear door closed over and door handle removed (the 2nd blob is the filler cap). Reminds me a bit of eg Citroen Ami 8 Service or GService vans, but it only has the normal boot, not a tailgate, and would make more sense to convert an estate shell. Can't find any reference to anything like it in my ADO16 bible - BMC built about 50 1100 van prototypes in late 67 split between Austin and Morris badging, but were based on estate. https://www.flickr.com/photos/reme-ytt/50940862277/in/photostream/ Apparently they were very good, but the Hydrolastic suspension did not cope well with heavy loads, and when loaded the front "pointed skywards" so the project was abandoned. A few (22) had gone to ShellMex BP for evaluation but were reclaimed, and the batch lived out their lives as factory hacks at Longbridge and Cowley. Some non-factory van conversions were created by panelling the side windows and ripping out the rear seat - eg DER TV rentals made a batch, but again they used estates because of the tailgate. So this is a puzzle - it's been done with a bit of effort so is not just a casual slap of paint, but seems pointless to spend this effort on a saloon. |

There are / were some funny rules regarding commercial vehicle taxation in France. For instance estate cars with no rear seats fitted could be registered / taxed as a van. Maybe it was a dodge to save money. -- Last edit: 2022-03-02 07:21:28 |
