This is listed as a 1950 but I'm more inclined to think it's a '51. The rear bumper guards visible just don't look like the 1950 style. The headlamp rim looks like a '50 style but it could be the lighting. It is obscured at the bottom. |

I keep thinking this is a 1950 for two reasons. One: the taillights, they definitely appear to be of the flat 1950 type rather than the protruding ones that the 1951 had. Of course, the lense could have been broken or salvaged. Secondly, and more importantly; the front fender - the 1951 Commanders shared the wheelbase with the Champions and as such the fenders are shorter on the 1951. This appears to have the longer fender as seen on the 1950 models. This change is also reflected in the rocker panel style. On the 1950, the edge is rounded and extends into the fender, which can be seen on the subject car. On the 1951, the edge is sharply cut off at the cowl. As for the bumpers, they could easily have been replaced at some stage in this cars 15-year-lifetime before meeting its sad and ultimate end at this Ozark junkyard. I have also come across images of multiple 1950 Studebakers with similar overriders and bumper guards. |

Your points are excellent and have caused me to change my mind. Restoring this to 1950. On my screen, I cannot make out any tail lamp lenses at all. As for the rocker trim, I had never noticed this variance before. Thanks, Lateef. I will add this to my reference records. |
