I don't understand. As far as I know the European style headlight glass covering didn't spread the lights properly, especially not on full beam. Hence most W111, W112, W108 and W109 were equippped with additional lights, not because it looked nice, but because travelling faster than 80 kph at night became somewhat difficult when the driver didn't see the road. However, I have been told that those 'American' lights didn't came about because it spread the lights better but because it didn't create much shards if the car would crash. I don't know if that was because they were made by plastics or if the were of a 'sealed beam' construction. The 'American' style headlights was possible to order also in Europe, but wasn't common at the time. I'm not sure how the mounting of the 'American' and the 'European' headlights differ, but it cannot be too difficult to swap. Or can it? About the MY of the above one, I'd say it might be earlier than the 280 SE. The inside rear view mirror has a chrome finnish (no 280 SE), and the horn ring doesn't have rounded top (capture 2)(late 220 SE and the whole production run of the 250 SE). Also, the outside rear view mirror has a narrow stem (capture 9)(no 280 SE, which had a thicker stem). Capture 5 shows it has a twin exhaust (= no 220 SE). I believe this actually is a 250 SE. -- Last edit: 2021-12-25 19:38:41 |

Yes, the objection is justified! Althoug we see the inlay of 8-shaped headlight it can be retrofitted and is not a part of the body. Furthermore it is as you have said the different headlights could be swapped easily without any change to inner structure and the other parts mirror , steering wheel etc... To be honest, i thought of thta 250 SE at first and was confused by that 3rd thumb showing the fallen off headlight. |
