I'd read somewhere that this is actually a 1983 car. Also, Audi Quattro's were only available in LHD in 1981.

Yes, a later version. The front (lamps and grille) are the newer version, a loan from the Audi 90.

Yes, but Philip Glenister (who plays DCI Gene Hunt) said: “We cheated slightly because the Audi Quattro was only available here in left-hand drive in 1981. But who cares? It’s a cool car.”

If there is in all episodes, can we give it 5 stars Antp? :)

You only want it to get 5 stars because it's an Audi :p The Cortina in Life on Mars didn't get 5 stars.

And even if it is used a lot in all episodes, it is not known enough like General Lee, nor part of the series like KITT.

The most famous car in British television is probably the yellow Reliant van from Only Fools and Horses.

I think you forgot Mr. Bean's Mini-Cooper or Austin-Mini.

G-MANN UK

That's also a famous British TV car, but I think Delboy's van is even more iconic (if it's possible to use that word to describe a crappy 3-wheel van!). And Only Fools and Horses was a more universally popular show, for anyone older than 12 Mr Bean was a love-or-hate thing.

Also I'm still miffed at him replacing it with a 190d, thats as bad as bond trading in his custom bentley type r for a saab 900 turbo in the James Garner bond books. It just ain't right it should have been a brochure for another quattro or even the spot quattro, now that would have been an appropriate replacement!

Brief mention in Autocar magazine (12 May 2010, p17, Steve Cropley's column) reports a conversation with Philip Glenister that 2 quattros were used "one baggy, one immaculate", and that the stunt version would not create enough tyre smoke or oversteer so was sent to the folk who build cars for 007 films and converted to 2wd.

It's a real shame for the Quattro. I hope they'll be able to patch it up again, same goes for the Cherry they crashed in the same sequence. To me, damaging a car older than 25 years beyond repair in a movie is considered a highly criminal act.

From what I presume was the stunt director of the show, turns out an overzelus director is the one who killed the stunt quattro with the jump in 3x01, show in sunbars photo there on the left. which looks like a latter quattro, probably an 88 instead of an 83 like the first one.

"It was HWX that got the treatment in tonights episode, but it was pretty much a write off before that point. It had always been their intent to kill off the Quattro in the last ep, it was even discussed as early as the start of the filming of series 2. The plan was always to buy a dog of a car or rolling shell and either crash it, blow it up, roll it, or whatever the writers decided.

However the first ep - series 3 the director wanted that jump, he was a real hard nosed bloke who’s used to getting what he wanted and despite everyone pointing out that it would probably kill the car he wouldn’t back down. He had a vision of a massive chase scene with the Capri while the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK blared out as the soundtrack. On the recce I was asked how high we could jump without writing it off. My best guess was an 18 inch kicker ramp at about 25mph and it should survive, anything more and they risk losing a £5k asset. However on the actual shoot day everyone looked at the set and said it wouldn’t look impressive enough so the ramp was raised to about 40 inches and the speed was decided at 45mph. As the ramp was at the top of the slope I figured the car would probably hit the ground from 6ft up and I told them that they would almost certainly render the car useless, but the director wanted the big jump and the Kudos head honchos gave in. I managed to cobble on a sump guard and fitted some bump stops while they were building the ramp but I kind of knew I was pi$$ing in the wind.
Despite the stunt riggers putting 200lb in the boot it still landed hard on its nose and to cap it all the cameras (all 4 of em) were positioned wrongly and missed the main flight of the car. The director wanted to go again but my main problem was that the oil cooler had a half brick lodged in it and I didn’t have time to swap the one off APH. But the car was seriously twisted, it had kinks at the top of the B posts and as a result the roof had buckled either side of the the sunroof. The OS chasis leg was about an inch higher than the NS and the OS suspension turret had torn away from the inner wing.

So the future of HWX was decided, they’d use it for interior shots and as a parts doner for APH and come the finale that would be the car that takes the final bow. If you look at the photo of the shot up car that was in the press you can see that the OSF wheel is too far back and has a serious amount of camber."

so atleast it went out with a bang and not a wimper.

Do any of you bother reading!! Several people have posted how the car that was shot up was a junker, a rolling shell minus the rolling part. Heck the car was twisted and the roof buckled. THEY DID NOT KILL THE MINT CONDITION QUATTRO. They used a dead parts car. Yes it's still sad, but it was probably way beyond repair, especially after reading the article posted by "blackdr". These are very nice cars. I can put a good word in for 'em as I just got myself a red 1983 Quattro almost identical (I liked the one in the show so much I decided to go out and find one). It's the same body style and color. It's a truly wonderful car to drive.

There's a lot of info and photos on the ebay page ^ - can it be archived?? Full text of the 3 Question & Answer exchanges

Q: Hi this is a great opportunity to own a piece of television history and I'll be keeping an eye on the auction price. I was thinking that they would probably be worth more as a pair. I know you have since left the industry but was the other car also supplied by Action Cars? 12-Feb-14
A: Hi, Kudos (the production company) gave the other one to the BBC where it sat outside Television Centre in Sheperds Bush for years. It was parked inside the gate to give the studio audiences something to look at while queuing up. What's happened to it now that TVC has shut down I don't know Im afraid. Cheers

Q: Are the bullet holes filled now or are they still on the car or in the pictures are they just stickers now? 10-Feb-14
A: Because I replaced the doors after the writers were given the original ones they didn't have holes in so rather than punch holes in good ones I had some vinyl hits made. But the ones on the quarter panel, wing, and bonnet are actual holes. Cheers G

Q: In the pictures on flicker you have filled the holes in is this correct or have I removed the filler 14-Feb-14
A: The bullet holes were made a few days before filming the last episode, the holes were then filled and small explosive charges placed behind the filler (that's when that photo was taken) then the car gets a repaint and goes off to set. When the cameras are rolling the explosive charges are then fired which blows out the filler and leaves a hole giving the impression it's been hit by a bullet. As it stands at the moment it's still got the holes in. Cheers G

"the original Audi Quattro used in all three series of Ashes to Ashes.... also signed under the bonnet by Philip Glenister, who played its short-tempered owner, DCI Gene Hunt. This autumn, the Quattro was given a fresh MOT and a makeover. But she’s a former TV action vehicle and still has a number of battle scars from the exciting life she has led."

"The Audi Quattro has been donated by the BBC and lovingly restored by Audi."

"The registration number [JLY 751V] you see on the car in the photos are plates used in the programme. The actual registration number is APH 55Y. The car will be supplied with 'shoot plates' as featured on TV which are for display use only, but you will not be permitted to use them on the road."
