Almost certainly Ww2. Very very unlikely French rail co would buy expensive kit abroad in 1930s / 40s when they had own heavy truck makers. Never got certain numbers but British Army may have left around 700 !! Pioneers in France after Dunkirk. Certainly it was in the many hundreds.
