Looks like a Kadett [C], but in New Zealand?? Isuzu Gemini? Vauxhall Chevette? or was there even a Holden version?

I just bought a copy of this movie on DVD last week ($9.99 at The Warehouse)- I hadn't seen it since 1981. Looking in the background of many shots is a good insight into what was being driven in NZ at the time. The main character Mini is a 1978 Mini 1000 (not Austin). In this pic the orange car is an Isuzu Gemini probably also 1978. Chrysler Valiant and Ford transit van on the left. Where a registration number can be seen the car can be dated fairly closely.

Holden Gemini I think:

That's quite probable ;) I could have checked myself...

All Holden Geminis already listed have Australia as origin... I wonder it should be Germany, built in Australia; or Japan, built in Australia ??

Sorry, NZCarnerd, I hadn't read your comment...You're sure it's an Isuzu?

Left front, Valiant VH (made by Chrysler but called Valiant as opposed to the Plymouth Valiant in Duel).
Left rear, Ford Transit
Centre, Morris or Austin (looks like a Mini Clubman to me and by the taillights).
Right frontmost (obscured) Hillman Hunter Estate
Right front, Isuzu (marketed as Holden Gemini)
Right rear Cortina (light blue)

Here in NZ, even though the main GM marque is Holden, GM chose to sell this model as an Isuzu. We also saw this shape as a Vauxhall Chevette as well, but this one is an Isuzu - locally assembled from Japanese components. T - you are up early this morning!

In Lola Rennt, just before Manni crosses the street to rob the supermarket, the German version of an Holden (Isuzu) Gemini
passes him.

Perhaps that's what the guys are referring to as an Opel Kadett.

Or rather, the Isuzu Gemini was the Japanese version of the Opel Kadett.
Quote Germany is the "original country" of the T-Car. Under guidance of the Adam Opel AG the Kadett C was developed, the basemodel for all those Chevettes, Geminis, Marajós.

Cool!

Just my way of saying it's basically the same car.

DynaMike - to answer your question - origin Japan etc - Yes. In this particular photo almost all of the vehicles in shot would be NZ assembled. The 1960s and 1970s were the heyday of local assembly. It started to fall apart in the 1980s as cars became more sophisticated, and by the late 1990s it was all over. In a later shot in the movie there is a selection of Fords (Falcons and Escorts) on the train. They would be being delivered from the Ford assembly plant at Seaview near Wellington to the South Island.

As an aside on The GM T car story - from 1984 to 1991 we owned a 1976 Chevrolet Chevette which had been privately imported into NZ. An odd car - it had imperial bolts etc in the body - being American, but the 1400cc engine was Brazilian and the 4 speed gearbox was from the Philippines and both were metric. Late in the time we owned it the rear axle bearings got tired and I thought I would take the opportunity of finding another rear end with a ratio higher that the 4.11 fitted. Enquiries to the US revealed that rear end was a weak point in these cars and were the first thing to go when one was junked. I fitted a rear end from an Isuzu Gemini which had a ratio I think of about 3.78 but proved also to be much more strongly built with bigger axle tubes and much bigger brakes. It bolted straight in except that, as the Chevette was from the US and left hand drive, the Watts linkage had to be shifted to the other side. After I sold the car I believe the next owner fitted a five speed box which the car always needed.

Picture taken a couple of seconds earlier before the Isuzu and Hunter Estate appear and the Mini blocks other stuff.
On left - Valiant VH (if ID above correct), then a Commer PB.
Coming from right, the fraction of a wing is 4 door Viva HB (it becomes slightly visible later), then yellow Mk3 Cortina estate, metallic maroon Viva HC and last in the batch a blue Hunter.
Beyond the side turn and Mini, a blue Cortina Mk3 saloon, something taller but hidden, Mitsibishi Galant estate (or whatever local name), then 3 unrecognisable to finish with a white Mini Mk1 (one of the very few Minis I spotted in the film apart from the main pair) and then either a CF or Transit van.

Vauxhall Chevette was assembled in NZ between 1976 and 1981 and was sold alongside the Australian assembled Isuzu Gemini. Australia only had the Holden Gemini that was based on the Isuzu of the same name.
