There is a possibility that this could be a Royce that has seen the error of its ways and aspires to Bentleydom. The other option is that it is a Derby Bentley, either 3 1/2 or 4 1/4 litre, probably the former, which has had time expired saloon coachwork replaced by a more sporting open body. Since the placard says 1933, if correct, it would be the smaller engine. From what can be construed from the image, it does not look like the Park Ward open car of the time. There was a fashion amongst those who knew nothing of referring to the Derby Bentleys as “Rolls Bentleys” following the demise of the Cricklewood works and the introduction, in 1933 of these chassis. The R-R company, having bought the rights to the Bentley name, needed a product to which it could be attached, and used its 18hp supercharged “Peregrine” chassis with a very mildly tuned version of the 20/25 engine without forced induction to create the Derby Bentley which was produced from 1933 to the outbreak of WW2. The chassis were built by R-R in Derby, so perhaps this museum heard Rolls-Bentley somewhere and thought it meant something. -- Last edit: 2020-12-20 13:25:21 |
