This is NOT an Impala. Impalas always had Six Taillamps (Three on Each Side). This car has two on each side and is therefore a Biscayne or Bel Air. The area around the taillamps is painted body color on this car, indicating for certain that it is in fact a 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne (The same location on the Bel Air had a brushed steel appliqué finish). Indeed it is 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Sedan, model 1639. |

"Though the ’57 Bel Air was perhaps the most popular American car in Cuba, this particular 1960 mint-green edition belonged to Che Guevara. After the revolution, many wealthy Cubans fled the country. Their fancy cars were seized and handed out to government officials. Guevara chastised another minister for driving around in a Jaguar XK, calling it “a pimp’s car.” His Chevy was seen as a more populist choice." So Che's actual Chevrolet, and Jeremy actually persuaded the Cubans to let him drive it: Clarkson: "I suspect they had made the fuel pump out of an old garden sprinkler, but it didn't seem to matter, we had set fire to a Cuban icon." |
