Bentley MkVI or R-type.

About to commence book search.

Now tearing out my remaining (and very scarce) hair, as I can’t find a coachbuilder. James Young design # C16 seems favoured, but I can’t find a picture, only a verbal.

Found picture, not 100% satisfied.

Plate looks like K(?)X 777 or xKX 777. All the James Young 2-door Bentleys here or here with thick slanted B-pillars seem to be Sedanca DVs with opening roof section.

The opening part of the Sedanca de Ville roof-line is just visible I think.

I have been through the lists of MkVI and R-type Bentleys one by one looking for 777 plates. No success.

What I will now try, is going through the lists of cars by body type and work backwards. My new glasses are not going to be ready for another couple of weeks, but I’ll give it a go.

I'm not convinced, but just in case because it's a bit fuzzy - is there a 123 TTT format plate on your list??

More of the plate-

Could it be a Royce?

I'm now fixed that the plate is xx/xxx 777 or perhaps 717. I did look at the Silver Dawn and Silver Wraith pages as well from this list but nothing leapt out. Also the Bentley S1 and S2/3 folders seem barren. The Silver Cloud folder has - "James Young Silver Cloud Sedanca Coupé ..... There were 2 made (design SC23) on the Silver Cloud I chassis, #LSFE99 and #LSJF112." but body side flourishes are very different.

I have looked through my two books which describe about 99% of the MkVIs and R-types built, as new plus some later biographical stuff, car by car.

I also have a treatise on 40s, 50s and 60s coachbuilt and cannot find an exact match. It does not strike me as a Cloud/S type, but I cannot satisfy myself of an exact identity.

The major difficulty is that cars get re-registered to carry vanity plates or to transfer original old-style plates to later models, and the books aren’t always in the know.

I think that this is the design, not the actual car.

The other problem is that I don’t know which car this is!

James Young bodied qty 7 Sedanca Coupés to design #C16 on the MkVI chassis. There were no R-types.

One has a “777” plate, B435EW, Registered JGE 777 in March 1950 to Mr J E Hanson of Hanson Buses .

An original California car? Also erroneously referred to as a “Mk IV”.

Phew!

I think we can safely describe this car as a 1950 Bentley Mk VI Sedanca Coupé by James Young.

Unless anybody wants to pick a fight!

The difficulty was caused by my looking under “2 door fixed head coupé” rather than “Sedanca Coupé”. Once you had kindly decided what sort of body to look for the problem was reduced, as there were just the 7.

There is also the side issue of the “Teardrop Sedancas” but they are fairly recognisable, and a further side issue concerning the presence or absence of swage lines.

I think I have convinced myself that the plate could be JGE 777 in which case we could have a full identification.

Teardrop Sedanca for comparison. /vehicle_661832-Bentley-MkVI-Sedanca-Coupe-1948.html

Good Work jfs, plus it is just possible the registration's last smudged letter is 'E'

therefore it reads JGE777 so 'B435EW'

Finally, the car is now (2015 anyway) in Illinois, USA, where it keeps company with a very early 3 litre, an S1, a Turbo R and a Green label Arnage.

A man who like his Bentleys!

The Bentley Drivers Club stopped publishing the Members and their Bentleys book, saying that a) the information was available on the interweb, and b) it would save money, so I'm sorry, this is as good as it gets!

Btw Four and a quarter litre.

Cheers!

I was thinking about having a go at that poor old Mickey Mouse Royce, but it hasn't got 26 inch chromed wheels and a lowering kit yet, so I'll wait a bit.
