I got info off RAC number checks -back then it would tell you number of owners and change of ownership!- i convinced some colleagues that i had Derren Brown/David Blaine powers -hehe ! .Sadly they closed the loophole , but Autorader had same info - but then they stopped it :(

dsl wrote DVLA details:
Year of Manufacture 1997

How it is? Everywhere they write that last ones were made in 1994 (april '94 for example)*, but Jaguar still had some unsold cars back then. Is it possible that these "unsold cars" were in fact the "unfinished cars" - not necessary naked bodies, simply not yet fully assembled (with incomplete interiors or something like that) and this way some have later year of manufacture? Or there was some other policy of dating?

* As curiosity - here was XJ220 for sale described as "last one built" and it is dated even for 1993!

Not sure is it trustable though.

Question about all IMCDb's post-1994 XJ220s.

Often as far as the DVLA are concerned year of manufacture is year of registration as new. You only get differences between manufacturing and registration dates on DVLA records when a car was imported into the UK years after it was built.

As such, this car would have been unsold for a few years before registration.

True enough - all 275 production cars were made 1992-94 at a joint-owned factory at Bloxham in Oxfordshire by Jaguar and TWR (which was then sold to Aston Martin for DB7 production). They had huge problems selling the cars (recession, large price increases since announcements, big arguments with buyers who'd placed £50,000 deposits for a 4wd V12 supercar as originally announced but got a 2wd with a rally Metro 6R4 V6 instead etc) and had unsold stock lingering until 1997 when last one finally sold. Attempts to clear the unwanted orphans included the TWR XJ220-S - 9 made. But it was a big mess, and however good the car may have been, Jag had big image problems after all the court cases and really pissed off a lot of their buyers. Plus it had electrical and oil leak issues.

Thank you both for your answers. But is it worth to follow DVLA system of dating in such cases, when last year of manufacture is official and well known and we know that car had to be made few years earlier?

Agree - all our entries should be listed within 92-94. We can probably assume this is a 94.

1994 would be better - yes. Or empty year field? (not a fan of it, but in some cases...). Interesting if till 1997 could wait also older cars than from the last year of production.

Started a forum thread on cars which stayed unsold for years after production ended - http://imcdb.opencommunity.be/forum_topic-8159-62882.html - to see what we can build up for reference.

And a PS about the desperate attempts to sell unwanted stock - they even tried fitting Transit bodies to try to get rid of them .....
