Studs on screen rail seem to be early Convertibles only, particularly MM and Series II which would makes it a splitscreen, despite looking single screen. Some 1957+ (= Oct 56 to be precise) Minor 1000 have them, but many don't - there was a hood change from canvas to plastic in Sept 57, which might mean studs were removed for all later examples. Comments or other ideas?? |

It could be a Morris Minor Series II Convertible I think. There is a definite peak on the top of the windscreen and the corner radius looks large so split screen. I cannot say why the centre rib is not seen but the top header rail is deeper at the centre and not a constant width. |

The studs idea seemed to work when I looked at our collection a couple of days ago, but I can now see lots of late ones with studs so it's pants. But I've now found another trail to follow, although not sure how useful. Look for chrome around the quarterlight - I think original "1960s" examples (I'm being deliberately cautious) had a chrome insert at the top which came down to the pivot hinge (as this 1967 example), while "1950s" didn't. Two problems - finding enough examples online to see this clearly enough to start identifying when it arrived, and too many gleaming resto pics online which have adopted shiny formats, including full chrome surround. |

Some modern Morris Minor replacement glass channels, frames and quarter-lite assemblies are now produced from polished stainless steel channel. Also the 2-Door saloon and convertible parts appear to be the same part numbers. I would say the original finish was likely to be mild steel section painted body colour, as in the movie, right up to end of production. The Minor having the minimum of bright-work. My best shot is still thinking 1950s - either Series II if splitscreen (I can't decide, even after watching footage) or 57+ 1000 if single pane. |

After October 1956 early 1000, dished 3-spoke with small centre steering wheel and I believe exposed steel support arms. Prior to that a flat steering wheel was used from the late 1940s onwards. Dished 2-spoke, all plastic steering wheel, with large centre after October 1964. Therefore one-piece curved screen 1957-1963 Morris Minor 1000. -- Last edit: 2020-07-09 12:06:32 |
