I doubt it's a pre-production car as product placement since that isn't very likely two years before (even nowadays). Maybe customized without the idea it will be standard some years later. Or were these plastic intakes original spare parts before? Or are these just painted as the abandoned one below (of course I can't say if modified before or after 1989...)?
