Many words have been written on this board about "Rootescrap".

I just have the distinct impression that the few that survived crunchy sills and being repeatedly crashed went round the banger racers oval.

What is needed here is the truth, as supplied by an experienced user.

I had four of these on the bounce, L reg, M reg, P reg and R reg so 1972 to 1977. All were estate cars, all were grossly overloaded, overdriven and hammered without mercy. I occasionally towed a large horse box filled with equipment. There was one complete engine failure caused by an air leak on the input side of an oil pump starving the crankshaft bearings of oil, one gearbox failure and one caught fire due to an electrical fault. Can’t comment about rust, none of them got to be old enough. I have been trying to work out my total mileage over the five years which must have been approximately 150k miles. Other colleagues abused a collection of Maxis, Cortina Mk3s and Datsun 180Bs.

Since then, I never used any other Rootes vehicle, Viva, Mirafiori, Granada Estate, Cortina Estate, two Escorts, Astra Estate, Cavalier, two Golf Estates, Audi A4 and two Mercédès. I am sure I must have missed a few.

The principal advantage of the Hunter estate was they were cheap, and had a crucial inch or so extra loading height over others, but they weren’t exactly exciting.

Different examples. I think this is a DL 1725 Automatic from picture and faint online traces of same or similar one being sold a couple of years ago.
